Mesothelioma is a form of Cancer caused by the exposure to Asbestos. The mesothelial cells multiply around the abdominal wall the heart and the lungs.
The number of reported cases of Mesothelioma because of asbestos based working environments is on the increase, as many as 80% of people diagnosed with mesothelioma have said that they have been exposed to asbestos in some way. In the UK alone approximately 2,500 people were diagnosed with having this rare form of cancer.
How Can Asbestos Cause Mesothelioma?
As some of you may know that Asbestos is a fibrous material, made up of very small fibers. As someone comes into contact with Asbestos they breathe these particles in at which point they head for the lining of the lung, then then attch themselves to the lining casuing a cancerous tissue as they can change the gene makeup. Some of these fibers can also be swallowed leading to Mesothelioma in the stomach or they can be couged up.
Mesothelioma can be passed onto someone else from clothing, if someone has been exposed to Asbestos they can then carry those fibers on their clothing for someone else to breathe in, so families of those who work around Asbestots are also at a high risk developing Mesothelioma.
